Australia Awards managed by AusAID continue a long tradition of development scholarships that have been an important component of the Australian government's overseas aid program since the 1950s. They aim to:

  • develop capacity and leadership skills so that individuals can contribute to development in their home country; and
  • build people-to-people linkages at the individual, institutional and country levels.

Australia Awards contribute to the achievement of development objectives across a range of sectors and are a feature of nearly all of Australia's bilateral aid programs. AusAID works closely with its partners in developing countries to ensure that Australia Awards support the development priorities of each country.

Following the Government's announcement on 17 December 2012 to reprioritise resources within the aid budget, the 2012-13 revised budget estimate for the Australia Awards program is $331 million. The new budget estimate for Education reflects changes to global programs.

Promoting opportunities for all

Under the Comprehensive Aid Policy Framework, Australia has committed to have at least 17,000 people awarded a tertiary Scholarship and return home to assist with their countries development, with at least half of the scholarships going to women. The aid program is achieving results and we are on track to meet these targets with over 8,000 awards offered since 2011 and an estimated 4,300 awards to be offered in 2013, of which half are expected to be women.

AusAID's Australia Awards—fast facts

The Australian Government has provided more than 100,000 Australia Awards for study in Australia dating back to the start of the Colombo Plan in the 1950s. These Awards have contributed to the development of exceptional students from developing countries in the Asia–Pacific region and beyond. Many of these scholars have gone on to hold senior leadership roles in their countries and professions.

  • AusAID offers Australia Awards to people from over 100 developing countries.
  • AusAID will provide more than 4,300 Australia Awards in 2013.
  • In the last five years AusAID has provided more than 16,000 Australia Awards to developing countries.
  • Over the last decade half of all AusAID's Australia Awards have been for women
  • The top three countries receiving the most Australia Awards are Indonesia, Vietnam and Papua New Guinea
