Qinghai Forestry Resources Management Project

Objectives: The goal of the project is to improve forestry resources management and environmental sustainability and contribute to poverty alleviation in Qinghai Province. The project aims to build capacity for improved management of vegetation, soil and water resources for the benefit of local and downstream communities in the Huangshui River Catchment.

Australian Contribution: A$12.25 million

Duration: 2002-2008

Location: Four counties in Huangshui River Catchment, Qinghai

Project Components:

  • Component 1: Strengthen Forestry Planning and Management
  • Component 2: Development and Demonstration of Improved Management of Forest Land
  • Component 3: Project Management

Planned outcomes:

  • Improved capacity for sustainable forestry resource management for government forestry and related agencies in Qinghai province.
  • Established partnership between Project staff, forestry and related agencies and communities to demonstrate improved participatory methods of planning and implementing sustainable vegetation, soil and water conservation in selected demonstration areas.
  • Efficient and effective management for timely achievement of project outcomes.

Achievements:

  • The participative ecological approach to forestry and land management has been well accepted by the counterparts
  • The Community Development Fund has had a significant impact in addressing priority community needs and for income generating activities.
  • Friendship Award by the State Council
  • International Forestry Cooperation Award by the State Forestry Administration
