Introduction
On 26 January an earthquake registering 7.9 on the Richter scale devastated the
Indian state of Gujarat. It was the largest earthquake to hit the subcontinent
since 1956 and resulted in 20,000 dead. Four districts of the state of Gujarat
lay in ruin.
AusAID officer, Antony Funnell, travelled through Gujarat one month after the
earthquake to report on the relief effort. These pages are a photographic record of his
visit.
