Asia-Pacific Business Coalition on AIDS

The Asia Pacific Business Coalition on AIDS was launched in February 2006 to increase business engagement and coordination in the regional fight against HIV. Over the past four years, APBCA has supported the development and coordination of a network of national business coalitions that are working to limit the impact of HIV in the Asia Pacific region.

APBCA’s objectives are to:

  • Increase private sector commitment to addressing HIV and AIDS in the region;
  • Support workplaces to eliminate HIV based stigma and discrimination;
  • Assist businesses to provide employees with access to HIV prevention, care and treatment services; and
  • Work with international and local organisations to develop strategies and programs to slow the HIV epidemic and care for and support people living with HIV.

APBCA’s membership base comprises multinational or Australian companies with major business interests in the region. Members include Qantas, News Ltd, Price Waterhouse Coopers, BHP Billiton and Saatchi and Saatchi. APBCA is governed by a Board of Directors. Ms Susie Babani, Group Managing Director of Human Resources, ANZ, has recently taken over the position of APBCA Chair.

Twelve countries have now established, or are developing, business coalitions. Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Fiji have fully developed business coalitions. A business coalition has recently been established in the Philippines and other are under development in Malaysia and Nepal.
