HIV/AIDS: Australia's response

HIV/AIDS has emerged as one of the greatest global threats to development.

An estimated 33.2 million people are now living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, with 5 million of those in the Asia-Pacific region.

UNAIDS estimates that the number of people living with HIV in the Asia-Pacific region will reach 20 million by 2010 if our response is not accelerated. The effects of HIV/AIDS are devastating for individuals, families and nations, and threaten to reverse decades of development gains.

Australia has committed a total of $1 billion by 2010 in the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

Meeting the Challenge: Australia's International HIV/AIDS Strategy describes the aims, priorities and principles guiding Australia's response to the global pandemic.
