Overseas Aid

International Health Programs

Strategic partnerships with multilateral health organisations complement Australia's bilateral efforts to improve health in Asia and the Pacific.

Australia's work in international health is focused on the needs of women and children, national health systems and country specific health priorities.

The aid program supports the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and has pledged a total of $135 million over three years (2008-2010).

Australia contributes to the International Planned Parenthood Foundation (IPPF), the largest voluntary family planning and reproductive health organisation in the world. Partnering with the IPPF furthers the aid program's efforts in adolescent reproductive health, family planning and HIV/AIDS.

AusAID also supports the work of the World Health Organization in the Asia-Pacific region in priority areas of communicable and non-communicable disease prevention and treatment, child survival and strengthening health systems.

Other international health organisations supported by Australia's aid program include:

  • Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation to improve access to immunisation for children in developing countries
  • United Nations Population Fund reflects the importance the Government attaches to reproductive health, population and related policy issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • UNAIDS to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS by injecting drug users in North East India.
  • International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders in the Asia-Pacific region where the need for iodised salt is greater than anywhere else in the world.
