Multilateral Environment OrganisationsAustralia supports multilateral agencies to address key environmental issues such as climate change, loss of biological diversity, land degradation and the ecological health of international waters. These programs are supported within a whole-of government context and operate in close cooperation with other government departments. Australia channels most of its funding in support of multilateral environment initiatives through the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which was established as a multilateral mechanism for providing new and additional funding to address global environment concerns. GEF is now the operating entity of the financial mechanisms for a number of key multilateral environment agreements, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Australia also provides financial support for the following multilateral environment organisations: Other Related Sites:
