A massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused death and destruction - a tsunami smashed the coastlines of 12 countries.
Worst-affected - Aceh province in Indonesia - similar to losing the city of Geelong within a matter of hours.
The total death toll may never be known.
The Australian Government's response was immediate. AusAID staff were among the first on the scene. Australia's ability to provide food, water, medial assistance and shelter quickly prevented many more deaths from disease and injuries. And so began our unprecedented and comprehensive emergency response.
