Who we work with
Partnerships with a wide range of groups are essential for an effective aid program. The 8th Millennium Development Goal (MDG) highlights the need to develop global partnerships for development to achieve the MDGs by 2015.
Australia works in partnership with a range of organisations, including:
Whole of government: AusAID is only one of the many Australian Government departments and agencies involved in delivering Official Development Assistance. Together, this provides a wide range of expertise that enables Australia to address the development, economic, security and political aspects of partner countries.
Academic: Academic institutions and the research they undertake enable better targeting of Australian aid, more effective policy engagement with partner countries and improved coordination among donors.
Business: The Prime Minister has recently stressed the important role Australian businesses have in contributing skills, knowledge and experience towards poverty alleviation. There are a number of opportunities for Australian businesses to engage in emerging markets in a way that supports progress towards the MDGs
Multilateral organisations: Multilateral organisations like the United Nations or World Bank extend the reach of Australia's aid program as their large size enables them to undertake projects on a scale that would not be possible for donors such as Australia. Working with the United Nations and its humanitarian agencies, Australia ensures carefully targeted programs are put in place for emergency assistance and long-term development
Civil society organisations (CSO): CSOs like the Australian Red Cross and World Vision maximise the impact and reach of Australian aid and are an essential part of the Australian aid program.
Other government donors: Australia works closely with other government donor agencies to improve aid effectiveness through better harmonisation and coordination of donor programs.
Regional governments: Australia looks for opportunities to use partner country processes and systems in aid program delivery.
Volunteers: Australian volunteers play a vital role in the fight to eradicate global poverty. To assist Australian volunteers, AusAID awards carefully targeted contracts to volunteer organisations, and coordinates an extensive volunteers program.
