Frequently Asked Questions

When can I apply?

All AusAID positions are filled through a competitive merit-based selection process based on the relative suitability of the candidates. AusAID only considers applications for positions that have been advertised and as such, unsolicited applications will not be considered.

Can I get work experience with AusAID?

AusAID does not have a work experience program as all individuals working in AusAID must have a current Australian Government security clearance.

Can I apply if I'm not an Australian citizen?

No. The duties of all positions in AusAID require employees to be eligible to obtain an Australian Government security clearance to the level of 'Secret', which can only be obtained by Australian citizens. All applicants for AusAID's Graduate Program must be eligible for a security clearance.

What is the purpose of the selection criteria?

The selection criteria outline the skills and qualities required to successfully undertake the duties of the position(s). The Selection Committee assesses applicants against these criteria to determine whether they are suitable for employment in AusAID.

See How to apply for more information on how to address the selection criteria.

How do I get work overseas?

Individuals are generally employed to work in AusAID's head office in Canberra. If you are interested in working overseas, you should consider joining a volunteer program, a non-government organisation or a company contracted to implement aid projects.

See Other opportunities in the aid program.

Is the Temporary Employment Register always open?

AusAID's Temp Register is advertised approximately every 18 months. AusAID only accepts applications for the Temp Register during this application period. Unsolicited applications will not be accepted.

What is a 'generic' or 'several' round?

Most positions in AusAID require generalist skills and knowledge. A 'generic' or 'several' selection exercise will test applicants abilities against the generic selection criteria that apply to a particular level, rather than an individual position. Applicants offered employment through this mechanism could be placed in any work area of AusAID. The duty statements included in the selection documentation are provided as examples only, as the number and location of positions to be filled is not usually known at the time of advertisement.

Can I choose where I'll work if I apply for a generic or several round?

No. Applicants successful in their application for a generic or several round are offered positions according to AusAID's operational requirements. Therefore, you are not able to choose which area of the Agency you will work in.

Are all positions located in Canberra?

Yes. While AusAID does have representation outside Canberra, offers of employment are usually only made for vacancies in AusAID's head office in Canberra.

Will I be advised if I haven't been shortlisted?

Yes. All applicants not shortlisted for interview are advised by post prior to interviews being conducted.
