Short-Term Temporary Employment

Temporary employees in AusAID generally undertake administrative support work including filing, secretarial support and other general administrative tasks. Temporary employees are usually engaged at APS Level 1 or APS Level 2 from our Temporary Employment Register.

AusAID occasionally requires individuals with specialist skills such as finance/accounting and may approach employment agencies to assist in meeting these specialist needs.

Temporary Employment Register

AusAID maintains a register of individuals interested in short-term temporary employment. The Register enables AusAID to access appropriately skilled and experienced individuals at short notice.

The opportunity to be placed on our Register is advertised periodically on the Current Vacancies page of this website and in the press. Those applicants with suitable skills and experience will undertake a security check before being included on the Register.

Applications will only be accepted during the advertisement period, ie. when available on the Current Vacancies page.

Use of employment agencies

AusAID uses employment agencies to identify candidates for temporary employment when there are no appropriately skilled individuals on our Register. The individuals nominated by an employment agency should have a current Commonwealth Government security clearance.

AusAID does not accept unsolicited applications forwarded by employment agencies.

Summer vacation employment

AusAID's summer vacation employment program is an annual employment program aimed at providing employment to university students from the beginning of December to the end of February.

This program is for students who will be continuing their studies the following year. As such students who have completed their studies are ineligible.

To participate in this program you must be eligible for an Australian Government security clearance, granted only to Australian Citizens.

The work students are asked to perform ranges from general administrative duties to specific project support. Summer vacation employment is only available in Canberra and students from interstate are responsible for their own travel, accommodation and costs.

Applications, including a covering letter stating your strengths and areas of interest as well as a resume (c.v.) outlining educational background, work experience and other relevant information to the program, must be submitted between 1 August and 31 August to the following address:

Careers Coordinator (Summer Vacation Program)*
AusAID GPO Box 887
Canberra ACT 2601

* Your covering letter does not have to be personally addressed to the Recruitment Coordinator's actual name.

Students are considered on the basis of their application, the nature of their degree and AusAID's needs for extra staff in particular areas. Successful applicants will work in AusAID for about eleven weeks and will be paid at a rate equivalent to an APS Level 1.

See AusAID's Collective Agreement for details.

Please note that applications will not be acknowledged and only successful applicants will be contacted.

Internships

AusAID participates in the Australian National Internships Program administered by the Australian National University. The internship allows individuals studying development-related fields to undertake projects in AusAID as part of their study program. If you are interested in an internship with AusAID, see the Australian National Internships Program [external link].

Work experience

AusAID does not offer a work experience program as all staff working in AusAID must have a current Australian Government security clearance.
