Terms and Conditions of ALA Scholarships

The ALA Scholarships Handbook is the main reference document for AusAID, institutions and students of ALA Scholarships.

Candidates should read the Handbook carefully when deciding whether to apply for or accept an award. Please note in particular the following conditions that apply to all scholars.

Deferrals

ALA Awardees must take up the Scholarship in the calendar year for which it is offered, preferably in the first half of the calendar year.

Return home rule

All ALA Scholarship awardees must return to their home country or the region for two years upon completing their course of study in Australia; failure to do so will result in a debt to the Australian Government (also known as a ‘debt to the Commonwealth’) for the full amount of the Scholarship

Dependants/family members

Applicants should note that the Australian Government does not provide any financial or other support for ALA Awardees’ dependants.  Awardees need to be aware that the Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) contributes only to their costs as a single person. It is not sufficient to cover expenses incurred by accompanying dependants.

AusAID strongly recommends Awardees to allow sufficient time to establish themselves in their new environment before being joined by their family.

Awardees must contact DIAC for details about visa requirements for family members intending to join them in Australia.  See http://www.immi.gov.au/

Awardees should contact the Student Contact Officer at the Institution to advise them that family will be joining them and to get appropriate information, e.g. about schooling and child care.

Holding other scholarships

Award holders are not permitted to hold any other Australian Government sponsored scholarship for the duration of the ALA Scholarship.

Part-time employment

Award holders need to be informed of their visa conditions for entitlements to working in Australia. See Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship
