Carnegie Mellon University-AusAID Scholarships

Carnegie Mellon University-AusAID (CMU-AusAID) Scholarships are funded by the Australian Government to support a limited number of students from countries where Australia has a bilateral aid program, to undertake a Masters degree at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University's campus in Adelaide, Australia.

CMU-AusAID Scholarships are only available to students who have already been offered a place at Carnegie-Mellon University in either of the two courses available under this program.

Objectives of the CMU-AusAID Scholarships

CMU-AusAID Scholarships aim to strengthen human resource capacity in partner countries in public policy, management and information technology. CMU-AusAID Scholarships enable individuals from partner countries to gain high-level skills and knowledge in these areas, so that they can contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries. Therefore, scholarship holders are expected to return to their country of citizenship at the completion of their scholarship for a minimum period of two years in order to contribute to the development of their country.

CMU-AusAID Scholarship Benefits

CMU-AusAID Scholarships are offered for a one-year, full-time Masters by coursework degree to study at Carnegie Mellon University Australia. The two courses available to CMU-AusAID students are:

Master of Science in Public Policy and Management
Master of Science in Information Technology (Management Track) - this course will only be available commencing January 2007

For CMU-AusAID Scholarship holders commencing in 2006, the following benefits are applicable.

Tuition fees
Introductory Academic Program - The provision of an Introductory Academic Program for a minimum period of two weeks prior to the commencement of studies
Airfare - Payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route.
Establishment Allowance - A once only payment as a contribution towards expenses such as rental bonds, text books, study materials, additional medical insurance, home contents insurance, excess baggage upon return home etc.
Contribution to Living Expenses - a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by AusAID.
Overseas Student Health Cover - OSHC will be provided to cover the student's basic medical costs.
Pre-course English - If deemed necessary may be available for students for up to a maximum of 12 weeks training in Australia.
Supplementary Academic Support - May be available when essential to improving the student's performance to ensure their academic success.

Am I eligible for a CMU-AusAID Scholarship?

Applicants for a CMU-AusAID Scholarship must satisfy both AusAID's general eligibility criteria and the specific criteria established for their country of citizenship. Applicants will also need to satisfy all requirements of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

General Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

have a Letter of Admission to Carnegie Mellon University-Adelaide Campus prior to applying for a CMU-AusAID Scholarship
have recently undertaken an English Language Test or have proof that previous learning has been undertaken in English
be a citizen of a CMU-AusAID eligible country (see list of eligible countries below)
not hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status (unless you are applying as a citizen of the Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau)
not be married to/or be a defacto of, or engaged to be married to, a person who holds or is eligible to hold an Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status
not hold or have held an Australian government funded scholarship in the preceding 12 months or 2 years (depending on your country of citizenship) at the time of application
not already be studying at an Australian institution at the time of application
have been resident and/or working in their country of citizenship prior to the date of their CMU-AusAID Scholarship application

How can I apply for a CMU-AusAID Scholarship?

To apply for a CMU-AusAID Scholarship:

1. You must first gain entry into one of the two available courses at Carnegie Mellon University Australia. Please note that admission to Carnegie Mellon University does not automatically guarantee you a CMU-AusAID Scholarship. You must meet both AusAID's eligibility criteria and the specific criteria established for your country of citizenship. Course information and application processes can be found on the Carnegie Mellon University website.

2. Eligible students who have received admission to Carnegie Mellon University may apply for a CMU-AusAID Scholarship by submitting a CMU-AusAID Application Form which you will receive with your Letter of Admission from Carnegie Mellon University, to the relevant AusAID Scholarship Office in your country of citizenship or region. 3. Your application for a CMU-AusAID Scholarship will be assessed based on AusAID's general eligibility criteria and the specific criteria as set out by your country of citizenship. 4. If you are successful, AusAID will contact you with further information relating to confirmation of your acceptance and pre-departure arrangements.

Conditions of a CMU-AusAID Scholarship

Applicants who are offered a CMU-AusAID Scholarship will be asked to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia, agreeing to the conditions of the scholarship.

The most significant condition relating to the Carnegie Mellon University-AusAID scholarship is that students are required to return to their country of citizenship for at least two years after completing their scholarship, to contribute to the economic and social development of their country. Failure to do so will incur a debt to the Commonwealth of Australia for the total value of the scholarship.
