AusAID Program to support the control and prevention of Avian Influenza in Viet Nam

Objectives: To help Viet Nam combat Avian Influenza and other infectious diseases by strengthening its ability to manage public health emergencies, with a particular focus on Avian Influenza.

Support Components:

  • Component 1- A contribution of A$1 million for the joint UNDP/WHO/FAO project to Strengthening the Management of Public Health Emergencies in Vietnam (the first 6-month Emergency Phase).
  • Component 2 - Strengthen professional contacts and cooperation through the development of a 12-18 month program of institutional linkages (eg. visits, study tours, short term training). The program will integrate human and animal health aspects of disease and improve information exchange across laboratory and communicable disease networks. Estimated costs of the program, to be managed by the Department of Health and Ageing, is up to A$1 million.
  • Component 3 - Develop a combined field epidemiology and laboratory course within a learning institution or research institute in Vietnam. This will improve Vietnam’s capacity for disease surveillance and outbreak control at the provincial and district levels.

Outcomes:

  • Preparation and implementation of a national human epidemic preparedness plan.
  • Improved capacity of Vietnam to detect, diagnose, monitor and control outbreaks of diseases.
  • Improved information exchange across laboratory and communicable disease networks among targeted Australian and Vietnamese agencies.
