Cuu Long Delta Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project (RWSS)

Objectives: The project aims to reduce poverty and to improve the overall living standards and health in the Mekong (Cuu Long) Delta for 400,000 rural poor by assisting them to gain sustained access to improved water supply and sanitation (WSS) services.

Australian Contribution: A$ 25 million

Total cost: A$ 39 million

Duration: October 2001 – October 2007

Location: Five provinces in the Mekong Delta: Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, BenTre, Vinh Long and Long An

Project Components:

The project has 5 key components:

  • WSS Promotion: Improving hygiene behaviour for rural communities and increasing demand for improved RWSS services by means of adapting and implementing the National RWSS Information, Education and Communications Strategy
  • Institutional capacity building: Enhancing planning of RWSS programs and developing competent provincial tariff structuring and setting processes
  • District Towns WSS Investment Program: Providing WSS services to 3 district towns
  • RWSS Investment Program: Development of water supply, solid waste disposal and drainage facilities for rural clusters directed to poor households
  • Project Management

Outcomes:

  • 400,000 rural poor to gain sustained access to improved water and sanitation services, including 100,000 people living in 3 district towns
  • Provincial RWSS institutions and organisations are equipped with appropriate skills and developed processes and structures required for effective and transparent RWSS program delivery and reporting.
