Conservation and Development for Key Sites of the Man and the Biosphere Reserve of Kien Giang Province

Goal:

  • To utilise the natural resources of Kien Giang Province in a sustainable way with effective management of the protected areas

Objective:

  • To develop ways for sustainable and effective management of the protected areas and coastal forests in Kien Giang Province

  • GOV:  A$ 0.275 million

Duration: June 2008 – December 2010

Location: Kien Giang Province, Vietnam

Project Areas:

  • U Minh Thuong National Park
  • Phu Quoc National Park
  • Kien Luong and Hon Chong Coastal Protection Forests

Project Outputs:

  1. Flora and Fauna assessment report in key sites developed
  2. Land use management model for the key areas are established
  3. Capacity building and technical training on income generating activities and value chain improvement in the key areas
  4. Environmental awareness raising campaigns jointly implemented with the Soc Trang project
  5. Technical natural resource management plan and guidelines on how to maintain and improve biodiversity are developed and tested for three key areas
  6. Technical guidelines are developed and tested on water management for U Minh Thuong National Park
  7. Technical guidelines are developed and tested on the prevention and fighting of forest fire for U Minh Thuong and Phu Quoc National Parks
  8. Capacity in planning, project design and management improved

Overall, the project will contribute to GoV’s development of policies and actions towards mitigating the effects of climate change, such as increased typhoons, sea level rise and forest fire. Also, the project will helps create conditions for greater participation of the poor, especially from the Khmer ethnic minority (12.3 per cent of the population in the province), of the coastal areas in economic development.  Anticipated better management of land contracted to people living in the project areas will lead to increased production of agricultural products and new income generating opportunities.  These will include the development of small enterprises for production of high quality food and improvement of direct marketing for the growing tourist industry, including eco-tourism.
