Quang Ngai Disaster Mitigation Project
Objectives: The project aims to mitigate the impact of natural disasters in Quang Ngai Province in accordance with the Natural Disaster Mitigation Partnership (NDM-P) objectives through implementation of appropriate and effective management and infrastructure solutions for disaster mitigation and strengthen community-based disaster management.
Australian Contribution: A$13.585 million

Project Components:
Main Phase:
- Project management: To administer the overall project in an efficient and effective manner to accomplish the defined project outputs.
- River basin management planning: Through preparation of appropriate and verifiable simulations of the dynamics of Tra Bong and Tra Khuc river basins, management options can be identified that quantify the risks and vulnerabilities to communities and infrastructure located within areas of the flood plain affected by natural disaster events.
- Community based natural disaster management (CBDM): To improve work processes and responsiveness, communication, infrastructure, equipment and materials, skills and knowledge in small and large community units.
- Demonstration disaster management infrastructure: To determine the community support and acceptance that reinforce the benefits of selected infrastructure to the recipient communities.
Extension Phase:
- Component 1 - Project Management
- Component 2 - Building Technical and Institutional Capacity for Integrated Disaster Risks Management (IDRM)
- Component 3 - Building Capacity for Integrated Community based natural disaster management (CBDM) in Vulnerable Communities
Outcomes:
- Implementation of river basin management plans, which if used effectively, will mitigate the impact of natural disasters on vulnerable communities in the Tra Khuc, Tra Bong, Ve and Tra Cau river basins
- Strengthened disaster preparedness and management capacity in vulnerable communities in the Tra Khuc, Tra Bong, Ve and Tra Cau river basins.
- Appreciation, at provincial, district and commune level, of the value of integration of river basin planning, community participation and appropriate infrastructure delivery in effective disaster mitigation.
