Participatory Disaster Management in Dong Thap and Tien Giang provinces

Objective:

To mitigate the negative impacts of floods on rural men, women and children in Tien Giang and Dong Thap by decreasing their vulnerability and increasing the capacity of communities and institutions.

Total funding: A$2,804,445 including design; A$2,711,000 for implementation only

Location:

Dong Thap province
Districts: Tam Nong, Thanh Binh, Thap Muoi, Cao Lanh
Tien Giang province:
Districts: Cai Be, Cai Lay, Tan Phuoc

Project Components:

  • Component 1: To build knowledge, skills and resources to mitigate, prepare for and respond to floods amongst leadership and households in 24 flood-affected communes;
  • Component 2: To enable the Committee for Flood and Storm Control to facilitate a more targeted, coordinated, timely and effective response to floods in Dong Thap and Tien Giang;
  • Component 3: To reduce the incidence of flood-related diseases affecting people in the project area;
  • Component 4: To improve flood-time food security and the income of selected poor and vulnerable households;
  • Component 5: To ensure effective and timely program management and coordination.

Expected Outcomes:

The project will directly benefit 265,000 people in 24 communes of Dong Thap and Tien Giang through:

  • Provision of disaster management training and equipments
  • Provision of credit and livelihood support to many of the poorest in these communities
  • Improved access to clean water and improved hygiene and health practices;
  • Increased coordination and efficiency of the government bodies responsbile for flood preparedness and response
