Vietnam Rural Water and Sanitation (RWS) Program

Objective

To help children, their families and communities have access to sufficient household and potable drinking water throughout the year, and an environmental sanitation and hygiene status that facilitates improved health.

Total funding: A$1,723,000 including design expenditure of A$82,582 (AusAID) and A$82,582 (Plan)

Duration: 5 years (Starting date to be confirmed after the design phase in 2004)

Location:
Quang Ngai Province: Nghia Hanh District (Hanh Nhan and Hanh Dung Communes; Tu Nghia District (Nghia My and Nghai Dien Communes); Son Tinh District (Tinh Tra and Tinh Hiep Communes)

Project Components:

  • Capacity development - to increase the capacity of communities, commune, district, provincial and other stakeholders to develop and manage sustainable water supply and sanitaion systems
  • Connections, networks and advocacy - to ensure a coordinated response to rural water supply and sanitation in the target areas that utilises the expertise/experience of agencies and organizations involved in implementing the NRWSS strategy
  • Behaviour change - to ensure behaviour change in relation to poor water supply and sanitation practices through improved knowledge, awareness, changed attitudes and increased options among target communities
  • Water supply - to increase the access of children, families and their communities to a sufficient and reliable water supply of a quality acceptable to both the communities and national standards.
  • Environmental sanitation - to improve personal, household, school and community hygiene and environmental sanitation practices and facilities to standards compatible with the NRWSS program.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved capacity:
    • of communities to prioritise, implement and manage improved water supply, environmental sanitation and hygiene initiatives.
    • of relevant authorities at Provincial, District and Commune levels to undertake their roles in water, sanitation and hygiene improvement.
  • Improved water supply, environmental sanitation, and hygiene practices among the target communities.
  • Improved health status particularly of children and women, resulting in reduced poverty, vulnerability, and improved livelihoods.
